Runner’s World: A Race to Remember

“To honor a late friend, two runners are putting on a unique marathon—and gaining a new appreciation for race directors everywhere.

But training for a marathon is child’s play compared to organizing one. Just ask Betsy Luce and Jan Bastian. Neither one had ever organized a race before, but after their friend Shay Hirsch died in 2014 after an 11-year battle with cancer, they decided, along with Shay’s husband, George, to create a lasting tribute to her that would also be a gift to the city where she grew up. Throughout her illness, Shay wrote with steadfast optimism to friends and family about her treatments and prognoses, always ending with “Onward, Shay.” And thus the inaugural Onward Shay! Boise Marathon (plus half and relays) will be run in Idaho’s capital on October 30.”
